Laser Drilling

Laser drilling is a manufacturing process that creates micro-holes without making contact and this is one of our core capabilities. With Proto Lase laser drilling, it is possible to create holes with diameter of 0.001”. Our system allows precision and automation of hole drilling, so you get your parts back faster.

Why Laser Drilling?

The following applications are best suited for drilling:

· Low-cost production and fast prototyping
· Feature creation with specifications that are smaller than what molding or mechanical machining can achieve
· Fine features that need depth control
· Materials that are soft or ‘flimsy’
· Materials that need to be machined in a non-contact environment
· Requirements that do not allow hazing, melting, or raised edges
· Requirements needing layer removal that’s selective and controlled

You can also use drilling for the following specs:

· Flat sheet size can be up to 12”x12” with a thickness of 0.0005” – 0.040”

At Proto Lase, our hole drilling capabilities are state of the art and we continually create new ways to drill holes as tiny as 0.001”. We have engineers ready to work hand in hand with you to get better knowledge of your requirements (e.g. taper, feature geometries, materials, part thickness, etc.) and suggest a process that will meet the needs of your prototyping and production.

Our experience in Microhole Drilling includes but is not limited to:

Catheter Microhole Drilling: With our technology for catheter drilling, we are able to precisely drill clean holes in various materials and configurations like multi and single-lumen tubes. During the regulatory and critical design stages of the prototyping phase, we can rapidly set-up our laser systems to ensure quick completion. And during the production phase, we can significantly reduce the drill time and increase output with our automated system.

Optical Fiber Connectors: Optical fiber connectors and alignment devices require severe tolerance on hole diameter and position. We are able to satisfy or even surpass the requirements of several of the most difficult fiber optic applications with our laser technology and precision.

Probe Cards: Precision tapered holes alongside positional tolerances of about a few microns tight is needed for vertical probe cards. Proto Lase is exceptionally qualified to deal with most difficult requirements with the increasing number of test points and decreasing hole diameters. The materials that are applicable include: Alumina, Silicon Nitride, Mylar, Kapton, Cirlex, Silicon, Vespel and others.

 

Leak Test Holes:To validate leak test hole system, Proto Lase laser drills micro-holes into polymer and glass ampules/vials. To standardize leak test devices, a range of different sizes of holes can be made so as to duplicate flaws in vials for use. The size of the hole can be as tiny as 0.001” depending on the thickness of the vial/ampule wall. Additionally, it is possible to also laser drill blister packs and foil.
